A Knee Immobilizer is a brace that does exactly what its name implies: it immobilizes the knee joint and prevents it from moving.
An immobilizer brace is a long cloth brace that extends the length of the shin and thigh. There are metal support struts on the inside and outside part of the brace. Velcro straps hold the knee immobilizer in place. If you suffer a fracture of the patella or upper shin bone, a knee immobilizer may be used to help keep things in place during healing. The benefit of an immobilizer as compared to a plaster cast is that it can be removed to allow gentle motion to occur during healing. A knee immobilizer may also be used after ligament or tendon injury or surgery around the knee. It can help keep the knee straight to allow proper healing to occur, but it can also be removed for gentle motion to occur. Be sure to speak with your doctor or physical therapist to be certain that it is safe before removing your knee immobilizer. Source – Safran, M., Stone, D., Zachazewski, J. (2003). Fitting instructions
The BORT Immobilization Splint with patella recess consists of 3 parts: A large
middle part and 2 side parts attached with Velcro.
Before attaching the brace, the integrated aluminum splints which are in the
splint bags for the middle and side parts, must be formed to fit the patient’s
existing body contours.
The desired bending knee joint position can be re-adjusted by forming the
aluminum splints on the middle part of the brace.
The freely positionable side parts enable adaptation to various circumference
measurements. When set correctly, the side parts should overlap by approx.
2 cm (0.79 inches).
Lay the BORT Immobilization Splint around the leg from posterior so that the
kneecap (patella) is enclosed by the hollow.
Thread Velcro fasteners through plastic eyelets, guide them back and attach
them with Velcro under slight tension.
Attach the BORT Immobilization Splint so that, although the knee joint is
immobilized, no congestions are caused in the calf and foot area.
Removal
To remove the product, loosen the belt straps and take the brace off the leg.
